Esther's Guide for Picking the Right Yarn for Knitting Socks

You have determined the size you should make your sock, and you have picked out the yarn. Now it is time to start knitting.
Just like every other project, you start a sock with a cast on. The best cast on for socks is a stretchy cast on. My favorite is the German stretchy cast on. If you are familiar with the long tail cast on, the German stretchy is very similar. The difference a slit variation that gives the cuff of a sock a comfortable fit and an easy on and off. 😁
To learn the German stretchy cast on, pick out a US 4 circular knitting needles and some DK or worsted weight yarn. It will be easier to see what loop or thread you need to work. Practice the cast on until you have a good feel for it. Take up you US 1 or US 1.5 needles and cast on 64 stitches with your sock yarn. If this is your first pair, take you time and don't be hard on yourself. The first sock is for learning and learning involves making mistakes. Fortunately, with knitting you can correct mistakes! If only real life were like that. Sigh!
