Hello Fiber Buddies!

Ever knitted a sock that doesn't fit?  🫩

Determining the size you want should be your first priority.  Doing some measuring before you start takes a little bit of time, but once you have it you can use it for every pair of socks you make.  😁

How to measure your foot:

  1. You will need a partner to help you with this step. Pick a straight wall and stand with your back and heel against it.  Put your foot on a tape measure. Have your partner read the length of your foot. 😊😊
  2. Sit in a chair and prop your foot up on your knee.  Measure your instep.  It is best to use a soft, foldable tape measure.  A plastic dressmaker's tape measure works great.
  3. Measure your ankle diameter.  Measure just above the ankle bone.
  4. Measure around your calf at the point you would like to have your sock reach.

These four measurements are important to make, especially if you have large ankles or calves.

  1. For large calves, you will need to cast on more stitches.  As you knit the leg, you will have to decrease at regular intervals to make sure your sock will fit reasonable snug.  The number of stitches you cast on is important because you don't want a cuff that is too tight or too loose
  2. For Cankles, you won't have to introduce decreases in you sock leg.
  3. In either case, be sure to try the sock on as you knit to be sure you are on target with the fit.
  4. Choose a bigger needle size. Move up to a size   US 1.5 or US 2.0.  Be sure to check you gauge if you change needle sizes.

Another way to size socks if you have a regular foot size is to go by shoes size.  There are charts online that you can reference.  This link is a good illustration for sizing with shoe size. (knitted-sock-size-chart-for-knitting-with-fine-sock-yarn.jpg (1280×620))

Regardless of which sock sizing method you choose, do a swatch to be sure you have the correct measurements per stitch.  The gauge is important for any garment you knit but socks will not fit correctly if your gauge is off.  I hate to swatch too, 😠 but it pays off. ☺️

These tips take time, but once you have your perfectly sized sock on your happy little feet, you will understand that the measuring time was time well spent.  😆
